Recently, a 16-member delegation from the Republic of Ghana, led by Ghanaian Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, H.E. Kojo Bumsou, Ambassador at the Embassy of Ghana in Beijing, and Honorary Consul of the Republic of Ghana in HKSAR Mr. TSUI Wing-tak (Edward Tsui), visited Hong Kong for a multi-day trade and business mission. The visit focused on exchanges in areas including the gold industry value chain, financial services, and natural resource development, while further exploring opportunities for cooperation between Ghana and Hong Kong in the gold industry.

During the visit, the delegation met with the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau of the HKSAR Government and the Hong Kong Gold Exchange. In a meeting with Christopher Hui, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, the two sides exchanged views on cross-border investment, financial resource connectivity, and regional economic development. They also discussed the potential for cooperation between the development of the Hong Kong International Gold Trading Centre and Ghana’s gold industry, as well as the establishment of a “Golden Corridor” connecting gold production with international markets.

Ghana is one of Africa’s major gold-producing countries, with abundant gold resources and a production scale that ranks among the leading producers in the region. In recent years, Ghana has continued to promote the development of its gold industry, with the aim of making better use of its resource advantages and creating greater value from its gold resources.

Hong Kong, meanwhile, is well positioned to serve as a key link between gold-producing regions and international markets. With a mature financial system and a well-established gold trading industry, Hong Kong has long maintained close connections with funds, trading institutions, and investors from around the world.

On one side is gold production, and on the other is the international market. There is already considerable room for cooperation between the two. Put simply, the proposed “Golden Corridor” aims to create a smoother connection for gold as it moves from production areas into international markets.

As the development of the Hong Kong International Gold Trading Centre continues to advance, Hong Kong’s links with the global gold market are also becoming stronger. For gold to move from its place of production into international markets, production capacity alone is not enough. It also requires an established trading system and supporting financial services. Hong Kong already has a strong foundation in these areas, giving it the potential to serve as an important hub connecting gold-producing regions with international markets.

The development of the market also creates more opportunities for participants in Hong Kong’s precious metals industry. Upway Global, for example, is an AA Class Member No. 084 of the Hong Kong Gold Exchange and provides precious metals trading services, including spot gold and spot silver, to investors around the world. Through ongoing live trading competitions, the company also gives traders the opportunity to engage directly with real market conditions and actual trading results, providing a practical way for market service providers to better understand the needs of traders.

From gold production in Ghana, to trading and financial markets in Hong Kong, and then to investors across Asia and around the world, the “Golden Corridor” is connecting more than just gold. It is also bringing producers, trading markets, capital, and investors into closer contact.

As gold moves from production areas into international markets, market service providers such as Upway Global also play a role in connecting trading markets with investors. Looking ahead, as links between different markets continue to grow stronger, more market participants are expected to build experience through real market practice and continue improving their services, helping create a smoother path for gold from its place of production to the wider market.
